Monday- Depart for Israel. The transatlantic portion of the flight is between 15-18 hours usually non-stop.
Tuesday- Arrive in Israel usually mid-afternoon. We will spend the rest of the day getting settled into the dorm and becoming familiar with the village. The first few days in country will focus on the educational aspect of the trip. Increased social interaction will take place as the trip progresses.
Wednesday – Jerusalem & Surroundings. The bus leaves at 7AM. An overnight bag will be needed for our hotel stay in Jerusalem. We will be entering from the Damascus gate and walking through the Old city to the Temple mount/wailing wall. This is an exciting experience. We will learn much about the ancient city and Israeli culture. We will eat supper in Jerusalem, and stay overnight.
Thursday – Dead Sea, Masada, Qumran (Dead Sea Scrolls). Bring a hat for this day because we will be in the sun. The Dead Sea is not far from Jerusalem. We will learn many things from the Bible an Jewish history there. We return home to Mt. Carmel at 6 PM for a great meal, rest and interaction with people in the village.
Friday – Golan, Caesarea Philippi (Banias); Mt. Hermon (Mt. of Transfirguration); Tel Dan. Our education continues with visits to a number of biblical and historic locations
Saturday – Shabbat (Sabbath) Elijah’s “burning place,” Cultural interaction in the village. On Shabbat, the population of our village swells dramatically. The non-religious come from all over Israel to shop and picnic in the nature reserve. We will first go to Mukraka, where Elijah called down fire. There is a great view of the Megiddo valley (Armageddon) from there. From there we will walk through the market, and the Druze village of Daliat El Carmel. Here you will meet many Druze, who are the Kenites and Rechabites of the Bible.
At sometime during your stay here, it is likely that you will be invited to someone’s home to drink coffee. This is the symbol of their hospitality and it is very important to them. The coffee is different from what your are used to. It is flavored with Cardinum and sugar. It is somewhat strong, but it grows on you. If you like it, tell them so. If you don’t, pretend you do.
Sunday – Tiberius – Sea of Galilee; Yardenite (Jordan River). Today will be an easier day and less rushed. We will travel to Kinneret or the Sea of Galilee. We will take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee from Capernaum and then make our way to Tiberius. Then we will go to the Jordan River to a place called Yardenite.
Monday – Caesarea; Akko. There is much to learn at both locations. Akko is a very good cultural experience. You will have time to walk, shop, meet people and take it all in.
Tuesday – Megiddo; Mt. Tabor; Nazareth. Today we will see the fortress of Megiddo, which commands the great valley where the last battle will be fought. The fortress was destroyed and rebuilt 25 times. It’s ruins are the more thoroughly excavated site in Israel. Mt Tabor was the place where Debora and Barak fought the Canaanites.
Wednesday – Haifa. We are going to have a real cultural experience in the city of Haifa. We will visit the shuke and jostle among the crowds. A stop at the University of Haifa will also be made to see their ancient Israel artifacts. The day will end with a bountiful cook out with our new Israeli friends.
Thursday – Jerusalem. Today we will get a deeper perspective of Jerusalem. We will go through the last day of Christ before his crucifixion, and will vist the garden tomb where he arose. In departing, we will leave from the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem where the Lord ascended.
Friday – Depart and arrive home.
